The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a New Partnership Worldwide. Its Headquarters is located at Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.
In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, amongst others, the implementation of a new organizational structure and the filling of all vacant posts.
The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the post of Child Rights Officer in the Department of Social Affairs.
1. Post:

Immediate Supervisor: Secretary of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC): Secretariat of the CERWC
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia



2. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To assist the Secretariat in formulating policies; Plans of Action and programmes relating to the children rights and in monitoring their implementation;
  • To advocate for and sensitize Member States and Stakeholders for the ratification and the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the implementation of harmonized related policies;
  • To assist on the follow up of State Parties and NGO reporting on the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the preparation of the consideration of these Reports namely the pre-session, the preparation of countries brief, the list of issue, the Recommendations to the State Parties and the follow-up of these Recommendations;
  • To follow up the applications of observers status and the Communications received by the Secretariat;
  • Follow up on the implementation of the Summit Decisions, the Committee’s Sessions Recommendations and Decisions, and other AU organs related to children rights;
  • To assist in the preparation and organization of the Committee meetings as well as activities or all meetings involving the Committee and related to the rights of children
  • To participate in seminars, workshops, conferences on issues related to the rights of children and disseminate information on the Committee and AUC programmes and strategies;
  • To produce and submit periodic Reports on Committee meetings and activities including specific missions and progress Reports on the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and various Policy Instruments and Decisions on the rights of children;
  • To cooperate with the AU Organs, specialized institutions, RECs, UN Agencies,  Organizations, NGOs and CSOs dealing with child rights advocacy and research on the rights of children;
  • To assist the Secretary in the coordination and administration of the work of the Committee;
  • To perform any legal duties and other as may be assigned.
3. Educational Qualifications and Experience Required:
Educational qualifications: Candidates must have at least a Bachelor Degree in law.   Additional qualification in human rights is an added advantage.
Work experience: Candidates must have at least 5 years of experience in child rights advocacy and child development work. Experience working with an NGO or Inter-governmental Organization is desirable in either/or both at national and international level. Knowledge and experience of the AU is an added advantage.
4. Other Relevant Skills:
  • Computer literacy;
  • Working knowledge of policy analysis and programme/project development, implementation and monitoring;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work autonomously and in a multi- cultural environment;
  • Excellent drafting and report writing skills;
  • Good communication and negotiating skills;
  • Good organizational skills.
5. Language Requirement:
  • Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages.
  • Knowledge of other working languages would be an added advantage.
6. Age Requirement:
Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.
7. Tenure of Appointment: The appointment will be made on fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract could be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

10. Remuneration: Indicative basic salary of US$27,892.00 per annum plus other related entitlements-e.g. Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance ($14,414.40 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
