OSIEA Crime and Criminal Justice Initiative Program Officer Job in Kenya

We are seeking a Program Officer to coordinate a violence prevention and criminal justice reform program in Kenya.

The Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA) works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and strategic violence prevention and criminal justice program. Components of such a program include: promoting resilience in young children, preventing domestic violence, developing opportunities for youth, addressing alcohol and substance abuse, providing victim support, reducing the availability of weapons, promoting diversion from pretrial detention and incarceration, supporting effective offender re-entry, and supporting community mobilization.
  • Design grant-making and advocacy strategies to advance the program.
  • Compile and disseminate information on violence prevention and criminal justice reform best practices.
Qualifications
  • Substantive knowledge of crime prevention and criminal justice in Kenya
  • Minimum of five years experience working with international crime prevention programs, criminal justice reform initiatives, and/or with national government agencies
  • Advanced degree in relevant area of study
  • Expertise in NGO capacity building and evaluation
  • Extraordinary initiative, creativity and capacity to think strategically
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse array of people
  • Team spirit and respectful working and decision-making style
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail
  • Integrity, diplomatic manner and professional discretion essential
  • Travel as needed

ActionAid International Kenya (AAIK) has been working in Kenya since 1972 to facilitate processes that eradicate poverty and ensure social justice through anti-poverty projects, local institutional capability building and public policy influencing.

AAIK works in 20 districts of Kenya and links key international, national and local institutions in favour of poor people.

ActionAid International Kenya seeks to recruit dynamic and innovative persons to fill the following new positions based at Bamburi Development Initiative (DI) in Kisauni District and Marafa Development Initiative (DI) in Magarini District, Coast Region.

Programme Co-ordinators (2)

Reporting to the Regional Coordinator, you will be committed to the cause of poverty eradication, while overseeing appropriate planning, development, implementation, monitoring and review of long-term development programmes and initiatives at the Development Initiative (DI).

Key responsibilities will include the following:
  • Building strong alliances in the area through empowering and building capacity of people living in poverty and their Community Organisations and other partners for sustainable development
  • Promoting the highest standards of integrity, cost consciousness and accountability in line with ActionAid Learning and Planning Systems (ALPS) and ActionAid's values
  • Representing the organisation at meetings with Government and other actors at the District level
  • Promoting women's rights and empowerment through gender mainstreaming in all programmes by addressing operational and strategic gender needs of the communities and partners in the Programme area
  • Overseeing and working with community institutions to provide timely and efficient responses to Child Sponsorship activities
  • Directly participating and supporting rights holders and their institutions to participate in national policy formulation processes and ensuring that their interests are taken into the development process
  • Overseeing the Accounting function in the Development Initiative
  • Undertaking regular assessments and reviews of progress and impact of development projects to ensure constant learning and improvement; and
  • Ensuring that information sharing, learning and documentation takes place between and among the Development Initiative staff, partners and across the organisation.
Profile:

Our preferred candidates will have:
  • A degree preferably in social sciences with at least three years' experience in programme development and management
  • Self-motivation, a team leader who must be able to spend sufficient time in the field working with people living in poverty
  • Strong analytical skills and a high level of credibility in order to assist the rights holders in determining their solutions
  • A team player who is eager to address the root causes of poverty through grassroots community actions
  • Experience in participatory development approaches, tools and methodologies
  • High integrity, excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A good understanding of the economic and developmental issues in the project area and region; and
  • Computer, financial management, proposal and report writing skills and a holder of a valid Kenyan driving license.
  • Fluency in the local language is a requirement, and you must be willing to reside in the project area.
