 Kiambiu, Mathare, Kibera and Mukuru urban settlements, Nairobi, Kenya.

Improving the food security situation of vulnerable urban population affected by the food crisis in Kenya

Starting date:
 10th November, 2010 (17 days consultancy)

Duration of the field work:
 10 days

Time dedicated to the desk
 review: 2 days

Time dedicated to report writing: 5 days

Presentation of the project to be evaluated

The current food security project began in January 2010. It targets four informal settlements in Nairobi, namely Kibera, Mathare, Kiambiu and Mukuru-Lungalunga. The project has three main components: Garden-in-a-sack, small scale greenhouse production and poultry rearing.

Purposes of the evaluation

The purpose of this evaluation is to draw lessons from the implementation experience that the program team has gained so far. This evaluation will address each and every activity as per the proposal. Recommendations from the midterm evaluation will be used to improve the current project by making adjustments to the implementation approach where necessary.

Deliverables

The evaluation report should include at least:

  • One narrative report (max 40 pages) including an executive summary (2 pages maximum).
  • A separate table summarizing the main findings and the lessons learned.
  • A separate table showing the different recommendations and tips for their implementation.
  • A Power point presentation of the main findings and recommendations of the evaluation.
Qualification of the Lead consultant
  • University degree in Development studies, Social Sciences, Food Security, Agriculture or other relevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience working with NGOs.
  • Proven experience in similar evaluation context (Urban Milieu).
  • Strong methodology and writing capacities.
