Pact Kenya is a Kenyan non governmental organization that facilitates institutional development of civil society organizations through grants management and capacity development.

We work in environment and natural resources management, conflict management and peace building, democracy and governance and women empowerment.

We are seeking to recruit a competent individual for the following position.

Senior Programme Officer (Democracy & Governance) 
(PK/SPODG/2010)

Reporting to the Head of Peace, Democracy & Governance, and based in Nairobi, the officer will primarily provide training, mentoring and guidance to program partners.

S/he will assist in assessing the Kenyan democracy and governance context, developing and implementing programmes. S/he will assess current practices, structure and policies, identify appropriate capacity development interventions, design and deliver capacity development interventions to target CSOs.

S/he will support programme reporting, peer learning on key cross-cutting issues within programmes, and keep abreast of changing sector knowledge and best practice.

Specific responsibilities:

Specifically, the Senior Programme Officer will be responsible for the following:
  • Contribute towards program development, design, planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Track and analyze governance reforms and report the Kenyan democracy and governance context on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Participate in the selection of appropriate partners for Pact Kenya’s democracy and governance interventions
  • Support Pact Kenya partners in the development of effective democracy and governance projects and programmes.
  • Support Capacity Development of Pact Kenya partners by conducting Organisational Capacity Assessments (OCAs), assessing current partner practice and re-OCAs to demonstrate impact in Capacity Development and advocacy.
  • Prepare and conduct training and mentoring in areas of advocacy and building coalitions and networks.
  • Participate actively in contributing to documentation of “success stories” and other anecdotal information to enhance the overall quality of performance reports to the donors.
  • Share information and lessons learned with other program staff.
  • Provide mentoring and support services.
Qualifications, experience and skills:

The minimum required academic and professional skills include:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field. Masters’ degree or equivalent would be an added advantage.
  • Post graduate qualifications in program/project design, development and management.
  • At least 10 years relevant work experience in the democracy, and governance sector, at least 3 years of which should be in middle management.
  • Strong knowledge management, presentation, facilitation, analytical and report writing skills.
  • Self-driven and able to deliver results with minimum supervision.
  • Proficient in Ms Word, Excel, Access, Power-point, and Internet.
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel extensively in Kenya, work extended periods in the field and interact effectively with partners and willingness to learn new approaches.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural environment and with partners at all levels.
