TUNAWEZA is 5 year U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded program providing support and assistance to indigenous Kenyan organizations working in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.

The project is designed to provide organizational systems development support and technical assistance. The project aims to build, expand the quality of HIV /AIDS, and improve outcomes of HIV/AIDS services and the sustainability of HIV/AIDS interventions of local Kenyan organization including the Ministry of Health Structures.

Activities include organizational systems strengthening, technical capacity building in provision of evidence based HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services, and provision of grants. Particular emphasis is placed on expansion and sustainability of quality of HIV/AIDS interventions.

Overall Job Function

To contribute to TUNAWEZA Project goal to strengthen the overall sustainability, quality and reach of HIV/AIDS interventions in Kenya.

The deputy project director assists the project director in coordinating, directing and providing oversight of activities intended to increase the capacity of Ministry of Health and indigenous civil society organizations to respond effectively to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and will focus on:

(1) Strengthening service delivery with the provision of high-quality technical assistance;

(2) building the capacity of implementing partners organizational systems for sustainability of HIV/AIDS interventions

(3) strengthening implementing partners prevention activities, with a specific focus on behavioural, structural and biomedical interventions programming; and

The HIV Program carries out HIV AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research studies and supports HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in southern Rift Valley.

Laboratory Technologist

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties of an officer in this position will include separation, aliquoting and archiving of patient serum / plasma for long term frozen storage.

He/she will document and maintain sample processing records and enter the aliquoted and archived sample into a database for easy retrieval.

The officer will also prepare solutions, reagents and stains in accordance with standard laboratory formulas and procedures.

He/she will be expected to operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, analytical balance and pH meter.

The officer will maintain and make minor adjustments to equipments e.g. calibration and alignment. The officer may also be called upon to collect blood and other samples from patients.

He/she will record and compile daily readings on all temperature controlled laboratory equipment and areas and maintain laboratory freezers and fridges.

He/she will be expected to comply with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures and ensures tidiness of laboratory rooms and benches.

The position:

The position works in collaboration with other functions to achieve programme purpose and results.

Competencies:

    - Must have at least MB ChB or its equivalent from a recognized University and at least four years experience in managing health programmes, preferably with an international NGO in conflict situations.
    - Strong report writing skills with ability to collate and analyse information.
    - Ability to lead and motivate staff to achieve programme results.
    - Strong problem solving skills. Should be a good communicator as well as having basic computer skills

Laboratory Skills Tutor

The position:

Based in Mandera with frequent travel to Somalia, the Skills Tutor will be responsible for providing training in basic laboratory procedures to field laboratory staff as well as supervising and managing laboratory services in a rural setting in Somalia.

Provide effective supervision and management of laboratory services as well as on the job training of field laboratory staff in basic laboratory procedures as a key step towards sustaining appropriate and effective diagnostic services in a district health programme.

Will also be responsible for quality control of tests e.g malaria and TB slides.

Competencies:

    - Must have at least a Diploma in Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution and should have held a senior position of responsibility for at least one year in addition to 5 years of varied post-qualification experience, including working in rural settings.
    - Fluency in Somali and experience working in post-conflict environments would be advantageous.
    - Teaching experience is desirable while good communication, basic computer skills and report-writing skills are essential.
    - Must be able to communicate in Somali language

To proficiently analyze smoke, blend and physical characteristics of tobacco and tobacco related products in the laboratory following ISO 17025 and Global BAT methodologies.

He/she should also keep accurate records that meet the requirements of the accreditation bodies and regulatory bodies.

The job holder also prepares flavors, casings, distilled water and performs crosscheck and calibrations of test equipment

Key Responsibilities

i. Operations/ Professional/ Business

    * Analyze and determine physical, smoke and blend characteristics of test items in accordance with documented quality management system.
    * Perform inter-laboratory comparison tests and ensure that the results are always within the limits set so as to assure the integrity of results reported to customers.
    * Perform Gas Chromatography
    * Prepare and formulate casings and flavors used in the manufacture of quality tobacco products.
    * Perform trend analysis on results and initiate corrective action.
    * Keep all records of activities performed in the laboratory from their original data to the final records as required by the laboratory management system in order to maintain an audit trail when necessary.
    * Ensure these records are maintained and stored in a secure place.
    * Calibrate testing equipment in accordance with the documented laboratory quality management system so as to ensure integrity of the results.
    * Inspect and analyze in-coming supplies to the laboratory to ensure that the laboratory only receives the best quality supplies and services that meets its specifications so as to enable it deliver quality service to its customers.
    * Prepare distilled water to the specifications stated in the Kenya Standard for distilled water.
    * Safeguard the integrity of test items, testing equipment, reference standards, reference materials, reagents, laboratory apparatus through secure storage and handling.

German Foundation for World Population (DSW) is an International Non-governmental Organization working in the area of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. DSW Kenya is currently recruiting to fill the 2 new positions of counselor supervisors.

This is a field based full-time position that requires a flexible person willing to travel extensively and work across the Rift valley region with minimum supervision. DSW will be implementing the a 5 year HTC programme targeting Most at risk populations (MARPS) by use of all approved counseling protocols.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibilities

The CT Supervisor in collaboration with the strategic partners and the HTC counselors is expected to coordinate counseling and testing services in the greater Rift valley region and other planned activities of the HIV project and is in charge of the implementation and follow-up of the CT services in the target health facilities and communities.

Specific responsibilities
  • Support the day to day running of CT sights and referral points.
  • Ensure adequate staffing at the CT and appropriate coverage of duties
  • Ensure regular supervision of the CT counselors.
  • Ensure that all the project targets are met and the performance at the static and mobile CT centers are achieved.
  • Ensure appropriate training and certification for all staff providing CT services
  • Conduct weekly general and case conferencing meetings with counseling staff for problem solving; to develop counseling staff ability and teamwork.
  • Develop and ensure implementation of quality assurance protocols and checklist to monitor and evaluate the quality of CT services provided by the site and mobile units.
  • Enforce safety precaution measures at the CT centre
  • Maintain supply inventories of test kits, IEC materials and other supplies necessary for CT site operations.
  • Ensure that staff members understand referral policy including client confidentiality protocol, and have the necessary support to provide referrals
  • Ensure that support groups for the PLWHA are operational and that they have monthly meetings where they support one another and coordination of any other forms of support.
  • Ensure that post test clubs are formed and are operational within the area of operations.
  • Work closely with the laboratory team to ensure blood safety for transfusion
  • Work closely with the Clinical identified clinical sights and further referrals for clients in need of further management and care including treatment of OI’S and ART management.
  • Work closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure effectiv mobilization, IEC, BCC and adequate condom distribution.
  • Ensure appropriate data collection using standard tools provided as per NASCOP/MOH and Project requirements.
  • Monitor CT site activities; review data, conduct needs assessments at intervals, and evaluate services
  • In collaboration with the programme assistant/officer compile timely monthly and quarterly reports
  • Coordinate with other agencies providing HIV services through monthly meetings
Qualifications / Profile of candidates

Essential
  • The CT Supervisor will be a counsellor, lab-technologist, social worker, with more than five years working experience
  • S/he should have had formal training in CT
  • Formal training in CT supervision.
  • Previous experience in CT supervision.
  • Should have ability and demonstrated experience in training, mentoring and coaching other health workers. Those who have had training as trainers of trainers will have an added advantage
  • Candidates with interest in public reproductive health activities working with communities especially those outside the health sector will be preferred.
  • Experience in working with highly stigmatized groups and special populations is essential.
  • Candidates should have good organization skills, capable of working in a team and able to supervise other staff.
  • Should be able to use computer, write reports and able to train people within the community.
  • Fluency in English
  • Reasonably computer literate
