Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The post is located in the Electronic Publishing and IT Unit (EPIT) in the information Services Section (ISS) . EPIT is the unit responsible for developing and maintaining the official website and the Intranet websites for UNHABITAT. It is also responsible for overseeing the overall IT needs for UNHABITAT divisions in terms of Equipment, software and required Database.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Chief (ISS) the incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Participate in the analysis, design, development, testing, debugging, implementation and maintenance of existing and new web based applications in the UNHABITAT public website and Intranet;

2. Prepare technical and user documentation and training materials for deployed applications;

3. Support, optimize, design and develop multiple legacy and new production database in MS SQL and monitor their performance, capacity and integrity;

4. Create and debug custom queries, stored procedures and reports;

5. Administer MS SQL server installation, backup and maintenance plans and replication with remote sites;

6. Liaise with user departments to define and specify requirements and maintain function specifications for applications deployed;

7. Design and develop new web pages and templates for public site, Intranet and information architecture standards;

8. Upload and maintain content on the agency's websites and assist Information Focal Points throughout the organization;

9. Publish edited and approved content, review content on the site, repair broken links and provide usage statistics;

10. Keep abreast of development in the field, perform benchmarking and propose new software acquisitions;

11. Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Completion of secondary education; Supplementary courses/technical certificate in Information technology or other related fields required.

Work Experience

A minimum of six years of relevant and progressive responsible experience in information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.

Appointment against this post is on a local basis. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidate from the duty station is identified.
