Context
VSF B is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual that is capable of managing a multi disciplinary team and delivering timely project outputs. The Animal Production Officer will implement monitor and give advice on livestock production and marketing component of the EVSPII in accordance with VSFB policies and guidelines.

The Emergency Veterinary Support Project seeks to address food security in exceptional situations of transition i.e. among vulnerable agro pastoralist communities through capacity building, preservation and protection of livelihood for better productivity. 

Role

The Animal Production Officer will support the Project Manager in issues regarding the refinement of the animal health and production system; and give the needed advice to livestock keepers and small scale farmers so as to develop a sustainable production system and ensure access to safe livestock products. She / he will be in charge of implementation of the livestock production and marketing activities of the project in accordance with project work plans and budgets.

She / he will support the establishment of linkages between the private animal health delivery services and the livestock producers, and regularly monitor the progress and performance indicators for the livestock products chain. The Animal Production Officer reports to the Project Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and train farmers, butchers and milk vendors on value addition packages for livestock and livestock products
  • Establish, promote & strengthen community based animal health structures in collaboration with the Community Development Officer (CDO).
  • Carry out community meetings and workshops together with the CDO.
  • Provide business skills training for livestock keepers and CAHWs on market oriented production.
  • Assist and support the formation of farmers’ associations and CAHW business groups.
  • Provide assessment and situation reports from field locations.
  • Responsible and accountable for all VSFB project resources in the field locations.
  • Develop quarterly project inputs supply planner and ensure the supplies are delivered accordingly.
  • Ensure prudent use and reporting of field finances.
Field liaison and monitoring
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with the community, local authorities & other agencies on the ground.
  • Responsible to the beneficiaries to have their views incorporated in all plans and activities.
  • Conduct field monitoring and evaluation as required by VSF Belgium/ donor guidelines.
  • Ensure the EVSP monitoring structure and tools are used in monitoring the project beneficiaries.
  • Collect EVSP data in the prescribed formats for monthly reports.
  • Raise appropriate supply orders to be forwarded to the EVSP Manager.
  • Participate in regular meetings, committees etc
Essential or Minimum Requirements

Education
  • A university degree in Animal /Livestock production and relevant qualification in animal health.
  • Diploma in community development, Social studies, Business /marketing is an added advantage
Knowledge and experience
  • At least four years experience in the animal husbandry and livestock medicine in pastoral regions.
  • Qualification and experience in Community development will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of Pastoral field schools will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of the Guidelines on CAHW training and support.
  • work experience in busy livestock related emergency projects
  • Experience in working in ASAL environment in East Africa or pastoralists environment
  • Working experience with an NGO/Government institution or private sector will be an added advantage.
  • Dynamics of Community engagement and participatory methods and monitoring field operations is a must

  • Knowledge of Arabic and local Sudanese language is an added advantage.
