Create A Great Impression In Your New Job

Create A Great Impression In Your New Job

Congratulations! You’ve just been appointed to your new job. Now the real work begins. It is important from the beginning to convince your new employers that, in selecting you, they have made the right choice.

The first week in a new job is likely to be demanding and exhausting.
You need to be putting your best foot forward while standing back and observing the culture and creatures in your new environment. And while you attempt to take on as much information as possible, you don’t want to give away too much about yourself too soon while you’re trying to fit in.

You may have witnessed work colleagues who, on their first day of work had told you about all members of their clan, their Ex-boyfriend who cheated on them and such intimate stories.

Most confuse this with being open and adapting quickly to an environment. Truth is, being too open at work can work against you. You may be a very honest person with no ill motives but it is advisable to first learn about your new colleagues, their likes and dislikes and then choose what to say and what to keep to yourself. This does not mean approaching your new colleagues with suspicion but it requires maturity and a measured approach to build a harmonious relationship at work.

To enable you to fit in quickly, find out as much you can about your company and its organizational structure. Identify the most successful and highly valued people in the firm and analyze the reasons for their success. Use them as your role models. Associate with colleagues who are perceived as ideal employees but without overdoing it and appearing like you want to replace them.

Prepare carefully for meetings with your boss. Try to anticipate questions and be ready with positive and considered responses. Make sure you are always well-informed. Keep up to date on current issues. It is unacceptable to be in a new position for two weeks yet you do not know of the various services and products the company sells simply because you are not in sales and marketing department. You appear uninterested in the company’s goals and too lazy to be trusted with work.

Learn all you can about problem-solving techniques. When you are given a problem to solve, tackle it enthusiastically and systematically. Establish a reputation as a good team player by developing good working relationships and cultivating friendships with as wide a range of people in the company as possible. Treat everyone with respect despite their character or their position in the company.

We all need people at one point or the other, so a morning hello to the door man and a smile to that arrogant secretary will do no harm.

Do more than is specified in your contract. Volunteer for assignments that will help raise your profile within the company. However, be careful not to step on others feet as in your attempt to impress your boss. Taking up one more hour after work to complete an assignment or learning more about your job and that of your colleagues will portray you as a dedicated individual who is willing to learn and eager to develop their skills.

We have individuals who leave the office at 5.30pm on the dot or even ten minutes earlier, well this may be the correct and agreed time to leave work and you may have as well completed your assignments on time but getting used to the habit especially if there is work still pending on your desk may again portray you as a lazy person who is just working for the sake of it.

With these few but easy steps, you will not only get along well with your colleagues, but you will also sell yourself worth to your employer and get a promoted to a more challenging and better rewarding position than you had expected.
