1. Overview of TechnoServe and Young Women in Enterprise:
TechnoServe is a US-based international non-profit economic development organization working
in Africa and Latin America. Registered in Kenya in 1973, TechnoServe provides business solutions
to poverty by supporting small and medium enterprises, working with farmers to access markets
and promoting entrepreneurship.

TechnoServe is implementing a three-year program in two slums of Nairobi (Kawangware and
Mathare). Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) program is funded by the Nike Foundation. The
program seeks to raise the level of entrepreneurial activity among young women in Kenya;
particularly the most disadvantaged, to catalyze the start up of employment-generating, women-
owned small enterprises.The program is working to provide young women aged 14 to 24 years
(both in and out-of school) with support, skills, and experience needed to transform ideas into
successful enterprises.
